It fundamentally alters the endgame gearing loop, trading the old predictable stat sticks for an expansive, highly randomized progression tier.
Here is a breakdown of how the system works, why the community is buzzing about it, and how you’ll be gearing up come launch day.
The Core Rework: From Rarity to Quality
The biggest takeaway is that the barrier between standard Uniques and Mythics is gone. Any Unique item in Sanctuary can now drop as a Mythic version, or be upgraded into one. When an item makes the jump to Mythic quality, it gets a massive performance injection:
- 30% Power Boost: Transforming a Unique into a Mythic item automatically increases its Unique Power effect by 30%. That is a massive multiplier for build-defining mechanics.
- Max-Value Affixes: You no longer have to pray for perfect rolls on your stats. When an item becomes Mythic, all of its standard affixes immediately jump to their maximum possible roll value.
- Visual Overhaul: You won’t miss these when they hit the floor. Mythic tier items feature a distinct purple animated glow and a unique ground appearance when they drop.
While the power boost sounds amazing, the system has sparked a ton of debate following the Public Test Realm (PTR 3.1) testing. The controversy centers around how stats are rolled on these new items.
Completely Random Stats
Unlike legacy Mythics that had fixed, predictable stats, standard Unique items upgraded to Mythic quality will feature completely randomized affixes. If RNG isn't favoring you in the open world, you can upgrade a base Unique into a random Mythic using the Horadric Cube.

Category Gambling
Upgrading items via the Horadric Cube is a gamble. The recipe rolls randomly across an entire equipment category rather than maintaining the exact item piece you put in. For instance, putting a unique chest piece into the cube might result in Mythic gloves or boots, while upgrading a ring might yield a Mythic amulet.
Season 14 is clearly shifting the endgame away from a checklist of static "best-in-slot" items and pushing players into a loop of constant optimization.
